A Brief History of the
Club
Members Past and PresentThe Looe Valley Club was founded by the
Rotary Club of Liskeard & Looe in 1984. During
the spring of 1984 a number of members of the Liskeard & Looe Club,
thereafter referred to as the Mother Club,
expressed an interest in the formation of an evening club, as they were
experiencing difficulties attending lunch-time meetings.
As a result the following Rotarians eventually formed
the nucleus of the inaugural Rotary Club of Looe Valley:

Under the guidance of the District 117 Extension
Officer Norman Minns,
the embryonic Rotary Club of Looe Valley was formed, by recruiting among friends
and business colleagues in the local area. After scouring the area for a
suitable meeting place, it was finally decided to meet at the
Portbyhan Hotel in west Looe, where a later
club member Louis Portman
was a generous host.
On the 3rd of December 1984 the prospective Rotary Club
of Looe Valley held its inaugural meeting with 31 members present. On the 11th
of March 1985, the inaugural Rotary Club of Looe Valley with 26 members, was
chartered as the Rotary Club of Looe Valley, with Richard Dent as its founder
president. District Governor Eddie Dart
welcomed the new club to District 117. The following were founder members:

The Club later moved its meeting place to
Looe Mills, where it was well catered for by
Aubrey and Millie Copplestone, before settling at
the Snooty Fox at
Morval where the Club remained for several years in the care of two different
owners - first
Chris and Penny Barnes
and latterly
Steve and June Wright.
In January 2001 the Snooty Fox was sold and the Club negotiated
successfully with the owner and management of
The Hannafore Point Hotel,
which was thought to be a much more appropriate venue for the Club to
provide Rotary Service and fellowship to the Looe catchment area.
